Football Passing Drills
Passing is a key skill in football. Good passing improves ball control, teamwork, and game intelligence. Below are 10 different drills designed to enhance passing accuracy, speed, decision-making, and overall team coordination.

1. One-Touch Passing
Purpose: Improve quick passing and first touch.
Setup:
- Two players stand 5-10 yards apart.
- Use cones to mark passing lanes if needed.
Instructions:
- Player A passes the ball to Player B using only one touch.
- Player B returns the pass using one touch.
- Continue for a set time or a certain number of passes.
- Increase passing speed as players improve.
Variations:
- Use different parts of the foot (inside, outside, instep).
- Limit passes to weaker foot only.
- Increase or decrease the passing distance.
2. Two-Touch Passing
Purpose: Develop better control before passing.
Setup:
- Similar to One-Touch Passing, but players are allowed two touches.
Instructions:
- Player A passes to Player B.
- Player B controls the ball with one touch and passes back on the second touch.
- Maintain a steady rhythm and accuracy.
- Adjust passing pace as skill improves.
Variations:
- Require players to use their weaker foot for control.
- Set a passing target (cones or mini-goals) for added accuracy.
3. Triangle Passing
Purpose: Improve passing angles, movement, and teamwork.
Setup:
- Three players form a triangle 10 yards apart.
- Each player must stay in motion.
Instructions:
- Players pass the ball around the triangle in a set direction.
- After passing, each player moves to a different position within the triangle.
- Increase passing speed while maintaining accuracy.
Variations:
- Introduce a defender to challenge passes.
- Restrict passes to one-touch only.
4. Passing Squares
Purpose: Enhance passing accuracy and positioning awareness.
Setup:
- Four players form a square, each 10-15 yards apart.
- Use cones to mark passing spots.
Instructions:
- Players pass the ball around the square in one direction.
- After passing, players must move slightly to simulate game movement.
- After several rounds, reverse the passing direction.
Variations:
- Introduce a central defender to intercept passes.
- Allow one player to move freely, forcing others to adjust.
5. Wall Pass (Give-and-Go)
Purpose: Develop quick passing and off-the-ball movement.
Setup:
- Two players stand 10 yards apart.
- Use cones to simulate defenders if needed.
Instructions:
- Player A passes to Player B.
- Player B immediately returns the ball while Player A makes a forward run.
- Player A receives the ball in stride and continues the drill.
Variations:
- Add a defender to pressure the passer.
- Increase the speed of passing and movement.
6. Long Passing Drill
Purpose: Improve accuracy and power in long passes.
Setup:
- Two players stand 30-40 yards apart.
- Use cones to mark passing zones.
Instructions:
- Player A passes a long ball to Player B.
- Player B controls the ball and returns the pass.
- Repeat with different passing techniques (lofted, driven, curling).
Variations:
- Adjust the passing distance.
- Add a moving target for advanced practice.
7. Passing Under Pressure
Purpose: Improve passing accuracy under defensive pressure.
Setup:
- Three players: two passers and one defender.
- Passers are limited to a small area.
Instructions:
- The two passers attempt to keep the ball away from the defender.
- Passers must stay in motion and create space.
- If the defender wins possession, switch roles.
Variations:
- Reduce the number of allowed touches.
- Increase defender count for higher difficulty.
8. Through Ball Drill
Purpose: Improve precision in splitting defenses.
Setup:
- Two players and a cone acting as a dummy defender.
Instructions:
- Player A attempts to pass a through ball past the cone.
- Player B makes a timed run to receive the pass.
- Adjust angles and speeds for variety.
Variations:
- Introduce live defenders to simulate game scenarios.
9. Rondo (Piggy in the Middle)
Purpose: Enhance passing skills under pressure.
Setup:
- Five players form a small circle.
- One or two defenders in the middle.
Instructions:
- The outer players pass the ball without letting the defenders intercept.
- If a defender wins possession, they swap roles with the losing passer.
Variations:
- Restrict to one-touch passing.
- Reduce the size of the circle for added difficulty.
10. Crossing and Finishing
Purpose: Improve passing accuracy for goal-scoring opportunities.
Setup:
- Wingers cross the ball to attackers inside the penalty box.
Instructions:
- Players practice crossing from both flanks.
- Attackers must time their runs and finish on goal.
Variations:
- Increase the speed of crossing sequences.
- Use both ground and aerial crosses.
