“It's been great” – Matthew Whibley enjoying Swiss season
Former FCV Academy student Matthew Whibley is having a debut season to remember with FC Versoix in Switzerland.
The 19-year-old has been a regular in the starting line-up, playing his part in helping the club end the first part of the campaign unbeaten in both league and cup.
A Swiss resident all his life, Whibley joined FC Versoix in the summer following a two-year graduation at the FCV Academy, and is enjoying playing regular football with his new side.
“On a personal level, it's been great. I’ve started pretty much every game and played the full 90 minutes mostly, too.
“We finished the first part of the season top of the league and unbeaten. What made us so successful in these first four months of the season is that we have a great mix of players, and an even better supporters group that come in their numbers to every game.”
The teenage midfielder is the youngest player in the FC Versoix team, but his relative inexperience hasn't been an issue, and he has been helped settle in by two familiar faces – his siblings, Greg and Jonathan.
“I was the youngest starter, although there were some players from the under-19s involved in both training and first-team matches. Most players feel nervous pressure before a game but when you start playing you kind of forget about it and just do your best for the team.
“I started the season playing alongside both my brothers, but unfortunately Jonathan tore his ACL at the start of the season. However, he still comes to watch every game and gives me advice on what I should be doing better and what I’m doing well. My other brother Greg plays in midfield with me and helps me out more on the pitch – they certainly help with my game.”
And while he is more than happy working his magic in Switzerland alongside his brothers, Whibley has got his eye on moving a little further afield in the near future.
“I’m looking to head over to USA at some point. I've been in contact with some colleges and some trials with clubs, but it's early days and I haven’t finalised anything yet. So we'll see...”
