FootballCV seeing the benefits of Belgian training programme

FootballCV students have passed the half-way point of their two-week training programme in Belgium, and have quickly adapted to a new way of playing under the tuition of some of the country's top coaches.

The group of students travelled to Belgium on the first weekend of April, making their way to the sports complex at Second Divison side Lommel United, which boasts superb facilities surrounded by incredible scenery.

The Academy players were quickly into the training routine, led by coaching staff from KVC Westerlo, who play in the Jupiler PRO League - Belgium's highest division. The aim of training was to get the team playing in a new, fluid style that they could put into practice for the game later that week.

That match, against KESK Leopoldsburg from the Fourth Divison, was brought forward from Thursday to Tuesday, but the players stood up to the challenge and recorded an excellent 3-0 win in front of a big crowd. The players were due to train with their opponents two days later but a torrential downpour put paid to that plan, leaving the pitch completely waterlogged.

The players' efforts have been rewarded with some downtime too, watching Dessel Sport defeat Deinze 2-0 in a Second Division clash on Saturday, before a sightseeing trip around Antwerp the following day.

Ann Dyte, FootballCV's residential manager, said of the trip so far: "The first couple of days were really difficult because they've been trained a certain way in England, but they've picked it up really well.

"The playing style involves lots of movement, the defence pushing up, the forwards becoming more involved, and they're really enjoying it. They don't look out of place, and the coaches can see they're really willing to learn.

"The boys were buzzing after the win; we had a coach back with disco lights and music on which was brilliant. The players loved it, and they're looking forward to this week's game which will be a really tough test.”

Intense training has continued with the squad building up towards this Thursday's match against Jupiler PRO outfit KV Mechelen, and we'll be bringing you that result and more from Belgium next week.
