FCV Academy share the spoils in English Colleges League thriller
FCV Academy and Loughborough College played out a 3-3 draw in an entertaining English Colleges League affair at Borderville.
The two sides were looking to get the ball down and play football whenever possible with good energy both in and out of possession, but the first half really belonged to FCV.
Following good work out wide by Rudolf Blagogee and Brandon Taverner, the ball made its way to Sven Hart to put the hosts 1-0 up. Several chances followed, but FCV failed to capitalise on fine attacking play in around the opposition penalty box.
Loughborough had rare spells of pressure, but the half-time lead was a fair reflection.
The message at the break was to be ready for a Loughborough response and, after Hart failed to get a shot away, a big clearance and counter by the visitors resulted in a well-taken goal by the opposition front man, making it 1-1.
Not long after, the game was turned on its head. FCV goalkeeper Charlie Giffen failed to reach what seemed a harmless through-ball, and he was punished by the opposition player; 2-1.
A response was needed by FCV and they got exactly that from Josh Spencer. The midfielder provided a little bit of magic, waltzing through the opposing midfield and finishing superbly past the Loughborough stopper.
This should have spurred the home side on but, after failing to get organised at a set-piece, some smart play saw a free-kick hit the back of the net to put Loughborough a goal to the good once again.
FCV pressed for a what would be a deserved draw, and a well-worked corner kick saw right-back Ivan Dzhambazov tower above the Loughborough players to head home and make it 3-3 in the closing stages.
After a calm first half, the second 45 definitely provided the entertainment but, on reflection, the draw was a fair result.
Next up is a friendly with Doncaster Rovers on Friday, in a 13.30 kick-off.
