FCV Academy fall to first English Colleges League loss
FCV Academy fell to their first defeat in the English Colleges League, suffering a 3-1 reverse against Derby College.
On a small and testing surface, Derby College started brightly, putting FCV's back line under pressure with direct balls. The away side needed to settle into the game but were soon 1-0 down after failing to clear from a throw-in.
In what was proving to be a scrappy game, the hosts doubled their lead after an individual mistake saw Derby's forward profit and find the net.
Although down in the scoreline, FCV were certainly not out of it and they had several opportunities to enter the opposition final third, although nothing came of their endeavours.
Some home truths were spoken about at the break and a response was needed by all involved.
FCV came out at with a great tempo and piled the pressure on their hosts. Better use of possession saw several players make an impact, with midfielders Richard Abel and Amos Dadet in particular trying to get a foothold in the game.
After a lot of huff and puff, FCV still couldn't make the breakthrough, and Derby benefited from another poor clearance, giving the home striker an easy opportunity to slot the third goal past Charlie Giffen.
FCV's man of the match Abel did net a consolation when his 35-yard shot proved too hot to handle for the opposition goalkeeper, but that was as good as it got on a tough afternoon for the Academy.
