FCV Academy suffer 4-1 reverse at AFC Rushden & Diamonds
FCV Academy returned to National Alliance Under-19 League action in midweek, when they fell to a disappointing 4-1 defeat against AFC Rushden & Diamonds.
In the early stages, playing against the wind and up a slope in the pitch at Raunds, FCV started very brightly in what was their first league match since mid-October.
They moved the ball quickly through midfield to feed the strikers but were unable to turn this good approach play into goals. Sven Hart was getting on the ball and driving the team forward but the hosts defended resolutely.
Then, with 20 minutes on the clock, FCV needlessly conceded a corner which provided the opening goal. An inswinging delivery from the right wasn’t dealt with, and Diamonds scrambled the ball home from inside the six-yard box.
The second goal soon followed when the visitors again failed to deal with a corner. This time the ball was only half-cleared to the edge of the box, before being struck home powerfully.
Opportunities to score were still presenting themselves but FCV were unable to make good contact with some excellent deliveries into the area.
By half-time, it was three. A hopeful punt forward wasn’t dealt with by the back four, and the Diamonds striker lifted the ball over the onrushing Charlie Giffen in goal.
That left FCV with a lot to do in the second half and a positive reaction was needed if they were to get back into the game.
Opportunites came and went without really testing the home goalkeeper, but eventually Brandon Taverner pulled a goal back with a good strike into the bottom corner.
That gave FCV new hope, and both Hart and Ilja Fjodorovs went close, but the visitors failed to make their chances count.
The scoring ended in injury time with more lax defending allowing the clinical Diamonds to break through on goal and finish under Giffen to add gloss to the scoreline.
