FCV Academy produce memorable comeback to defeat Mansfield Town Brooksby
FCV Academy made a fantastic return to winning ways in the National Alliance U19 League with a 3-2 victory over Mansfield Town Brooksby, despite being two goals down at the break.
The game began with both sides looking to attack, and the FCV defence was first to give way. Goalkeeper Charley Giffen made a save but he could only parry it to an oncoming Mansfield player, who slotted home.
The Brooksby-based side were soon two goals to the good after some sloppy play from the hosts. A ball in behind caught the Academy defence napping and the visitors finished to double their lead.
FCV created opportunities before the break but could not find a way through their opponents’ backline, and they were 2-0 down as the half-time whistle blew.
Harsh words and some substitutions from Academy manager Grant Brown sparked life into his side.
A change of shape and personnel, with Harry Whittington and Paulo Prato replacing Joshua Egbuson and William Green, saw the home side press as a group and not let have the visitors have any time on the ball.
It was substitute Whittington who halved the deficit for FCV, and that effort was soon followed by yet another goal from the in-from Brandon Taverner to level the scores, shifting the momentum firmly in FCV’s favour.
The hosts continued to push for a winner and it came, via yet another fine goal from Taverner. He showed sublime skill to beat his man and produce the finish to complete the comeback.
The win means FCV remain third in the table, just three points off table-topping Peterborough United.
