FCV Academy is heading back down under

The end of the season is nigh, and for Ben Watts that means a summer of recruitment. His destination? Australia, but not just Sydney this time.

FCV is casting the net wider, and they’ll begin the process on the other side of the country to Sydney – a trip to Perth is first up for Head of Recruitment Watts, from the 23rd to 27th June.

The Academy has had players feature this season from Australia, and they’ve performed extremely well during their time at Borderville.

Nic Railz visited Stamford for three weeks during his school holidays, while Amir Ajaj and Josh Spencer came for a little longer, with the latter even picking up the Player of the Month award during his stay.

“It's good to see new places and new players,” explained Watts. “We’ve got contacts out there now so we want make the most of it.

“We got a lot of interest from Perth and the college we’re working with is one of the biggest in Western Australia.

“We’ve got a couple of lads coming onto the summer course, and some on the Leicester Development Camp which means they’re involved with the squad – that helps a lot.

“The standard of the players coming out of Australia is high. Nic performed well for the short time he was here, Amir has been great, and shown he can perform at a high level and Josh has been very good too.”

Australia is just the beginning of the recruitment trail for Watts and the Academy this summer as they’re also heading to various tournaments across the UK and Europe.

It’s bound to be a busy off season behind the scenes at the Academy, but before then, the squad have plenty of fixtures to contend with first.

“We’re probably in the busiest part of the season,” said Watts. “We’ve got plenty of fixtures coming up and that's brilliant for the boys.

“We’re playing in front of people that these boys could interest. There have been a lot of scouts down over recent weeks from various levels, from Leicester City to Kings Lynn.

“They’ve seen our players perform. We want players to be thinking about their next step and where they’re going to be playing football.

“All members of staff will be out looking at players this summer too. We’ll be at various tournaments ranging from Guernsey to maybe even Bulgaria. Myself and Grant Brown have been here a full season now, so we know who’s staying and what positions we need to fill.”
