FCV Academy battle back to draw at Lincoln City
FCV Reds battled back from 4-1 down to draw 4-4 against Lincoln City's Academy on Friday 11th November in front of the Imps' first-team manager Danny Cowley.
Going well in the National League, Cowley took time out to watch his Academy team face FCV, who are managed by former Lincoln player and coach Grant Brown.
In a tight opening to the game, neither side were able to play any free-flowing football but there was plenty of endeavour on show.
And that endeavour led to City taking the lead in the 12th minute with a good finish from inside the box past Charley Giffen in the Reds goal.
The hosts were then dominant in possession with FCV looking very tentative, and they doubled their lead in the 40th minute. That's not to say Brown's men were out of it, though, and Harry Whittington was looking lively up front.
It was Salah Ahmad who pulled the visitors back into the game, however, after he converted a penalty following a foul on N'Gatta Kouame.
More pressure was applied from the Reds but the home defence held out with the help of some good goalkeeping to deny Rudolf Blagogee, Tai Wiliams and Brandon Taverner.
That defensive rearguard paid dividends for the Imps and they managed to score two quick-fire goals on the counter attack, punishing some wayward passing.
The scoreline seemed a little harsh but it showed the value of being clinical in front of goal.
But the game wasn't over; far from it.
Taverner brought the Reds back into the match by following up a rebound off the post to make it 4-2. That gave FCV belief and Taverner was on target again, expertly lifting the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper to take Brown's side within a goal of their hosts.
Momentum was now with FCV and it was of little surprise when Blagogee picked up the ball 40 yards from goal to drive at the home defence, skipping past three defenders, before placing a well-struck shot into the bottom corner.
It was no less than the Academy deserved with the players showing desire and belief when three goals down with only 15 minutes to play.
